NOTE: "The Passing of John Lothrop" John Lothrop, a picturesque figure in the early life of Nevada, died in a local hospital last Sunday. He had been a long sufferer from asthma but his condition was not considered acute until a short time before his death, says the Reno Gazette. He was the father of Mrs. Roy Stoddard and Mrs. J. A. Breen of this city, Mrs. Thomas Pepper of Sacramento, Mrs. C. C. Braun of Dayton, Frank Lothrop of Grass Valley, James Lothrop of Sacramento and Richmond Lothrop of Reno. Lothrop was rendered fatherless during a perilous journey across the country in 1852. June 11 of that year his father died in a cholera epidemic which swept the plains and he was one of six children whom his mother undertook to rear alone. Mrs. Lothrop, with her children, went first to Oroville, and shortly thereafter removed to Marysville. Later she returned to Oroville and opened the Opher Hotel, which she conducted until she came with her family to Dayton in 1861. With a basic high school education received at Oroville, Lothrop began reading law at Dayton and was admitted to the bar after fitting himself under the direction of W. H. Sewell and Richard Rising. Almost throughout his entire career, Lothrop was a prominent figure in the public life of the community. In 1864 he was appointed deputy county clerk and successively served as deputy county assessor, deputy sheriff and deputy county treasurer. Later he was elected county recorder and in 18__ was elected district attorney and served several terms. Prior to that, he served for a time as post master at Dayton. Lothrop was married May 10, 1864 to Mrs. Emma A. Britton, was a member of the Baptist church and was active in the interests of the Odd Fellows, with which he had long been affiliated. Lothrop was born in Missouri on July 24, 1842. Ruel Lothrop, County Assessor of Lyon County, is a nephew of the deceased and left this morning for Dayton to attend the funeral services which were held today under the auspices of the Dayton Lodge, No. 5, I.O.O.F.
